A Bargaining Model Based on the Commitment Tactic

چکیده

This paper studies a one-shot, simultaneous-move bargaining game. Each bargainer makes a partial commitment (a share of the unit size cake that she would like to get), which can later be revoked at some cost to the player. The payoffs are defined, in part, by the Nash bargaining solution, where the feasible utility set is affected by the players' partial commitments. Under certain assumptions on the two cost-of-revoking functions, we establish that the model has a unique Nash equilibrium. It is shown that a player's equilibrium share of the cake is strictly increasing in her marginal cost of revoking a partial commitment. An application of our model selects a unique equilibrium in Nash's demand game. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Number: C78. 1996 Academic Press, Inc.

Commitment and compromise in bargaining

This paper studies observable and irrevocable commitment in bargaining. We investigate when commitment tactics can cause an impasse and when compromise is feasible. In the static model in which a player’s commitment decision is made simultaneously with his choice of bargaining stance, compromise becomes unattainable (Ellingsen and Miettinen, 2008). We first analyze a static bargaining model, in...

Repeated reputational bargaining with deadlines

We develop a two-sided reputational bargaining model with deadlines, and analyze the implications of linking a reputation for commitment on one bargaining issue, to reputation on future issues. The model is adapted from that of Abreu and Gul [2000], where some agents are committed to achieving a fixed share of any surplus available. Among the conclusions drawn are: the ordering of issues on the...

Monotonic Mixing of Decision Strategies for Agent-Based Bargaining

In automated bargaining a common method to obtain complex concession behaviour is to mix individual tactics, or decision functions, by a linear weighted combination. In such systems, the negotiation process between agents using mixed strategies with imitative and non-imitative tactics is highly dynamic, and non-monotonicity in the sequence of utilities of proposed offers can emerge at any time ...

Employing a Multi-Criteria Approach under Bankruptcy Conditions for Optimal Allocation of Shared Water Resources through Using Asymmetric Nash Bargaining Method

Management based on the flexibility, fairness, and sustainability characteristics of water resources may play a key role in preventing the continuation of the crisis process as well as reducing water users’ conflict. In the present research, the framework for the optimal allocation of shared water resources was presented using a combination of bankruptcy concepts and asymmetric Nash bargaining....

Credibility and Commitment in Crisis Bargaining∗

Although scholars of international security share a skepticism for the extent to which agreements can be externally enforced, much existing game-theoretic work involves strong forms of commitment. Building on the canonical model of crisis bargaining we study the role of two forms of commitment in bargaining—the ability to commit to a settlement and the ability to commit to end negotiations and ...
